Where are you from, and what’s your academic background?

I am from Orlando, FL. I attended Florida State University right after high school, earning an undergrad degree in Social Work and a master's degree in Clinical Social Work.

What brought you to medicine?

In my last semester of grad school, I was selected for an internship in Durban, South Africa, where I worked at an HIV and AIDS clinic and also had exposure to a TB ward at the main hospital. Rounding with the physicians during that time piqued my interest in medicine. After graduating, I traveled to Rwanda, Africa, to do mission work in a rural village, and that’s when I really developed a desire for medicine that just wouldn't go away.

Did you have any clinical experience before medical school? Where?

Yes, I worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Little Rock, AR, and Denver, CO, where I was trained and certified in CBT and Problem Solving Therapy. Specifically, I worked in suicide prevention, providing emergency assessments and psychotherapy to military veterans.

Was Trinity a good choice for you? Why?

Yes, being in the workforce and having a family set me up to succeed and Trinity helped me. I was used to change; I learned to be adaptable and knew I would do well in a “foreign” school. After learning that about 10% of med school applicants are accepted in the US, I did not want to waste time applying over and over again. Trinity stood out to me because of the small class sizes, friendly admissions staff, and a testimonial from an alumnus I was connected with.

Where did you match?

I matched in Family Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia.

How does it feel to have graduated from medical school?

Surreal. Absolutely wonderful. I'm like, “Wait, I actually did it. I made it!” My family is so proud, and that alone is worth so much. I am the first MD on either side of my family, and I'm thankful to carry this privilege.

What was your favorite experience at Trinity?

On the island, I valued getting to spend time with classmates via studying, shopping in town, or celebrating my birthday at a super nice beach restaurant. I think the student body at Trinity is one of its greatest assets; I met some WONDERFUL people who persevered and gave 110%. I will always be thankful for that. In Georgia, I loved studying at the MEC. It gave me a safe and clean place to focus, and everything I needed was there.

What are you looking forward to the most in residency?

A solid training that exposes me to the broadest spectrum of Family Medicine. I want to experience the common and uncommon things so that I feel really equipped upon graduation.

What does becoming a doctor mean to you?

I get to be involved as a helper, advisor, a set of healing hands, so to speak, in the lives of people from all walks of life. It’s my calling and an incredible blessing! Additionally, this achievement means legacy for my children, nieces, nephews…anyone who can relate to me and is not sure they can succeed in medical school or who wonders what a physician is like up close and personal.
